CNC Machining & Assembly of a Cocking Handle for a Military Application

Schmid Tool and Engineering's expertise was recently called upon to produce a cocking handle for use in the small arms division of the US military. The part needed to be held to the exacting standards of multiple military specifications at every step of the manufacturing process.

Our design team created the fixturing, gaging, and the investment forging needed to CNC machine 6,000 cocking handles from 4130 steel and 7075 aluminum. Various machining strategies were used in the process, including forging, milling, and Swiss turning. Each of the parts, which measured 9" x 0.75" x 3", held to the required ±.0005" tolerances. As a full service contract machine shop, Schmid Tool also applied several secondary processes, including anodizing, heat treating, and applying a manganese phosphate coating. Final assembly was completed in our 5S Lean assembly area, and the cocking handles were packaged in custom partitioned boxes and shipped to the customer.
